February 12, 1809- April 15, 1865
Abraham Lincoln our 16th President was the first Republican President from 1861–1865.
He successfully led our country through a great constitutional, military and moral crisis – the American Civil War – preserving the Union, while ending slavery, and promoting economic and financial modernization. Growing up in a poor family on the western frontier, Lincoln was mostly self-educated. He became a country lawyer, an Illinois state legislator, and a one-term member of the United States House of Representatives. Lincoln is considered by many to be the greatest American President.
He was elected on a strongly anti-slavery platform. With his election, the Southern States seceded from the Union. Lincoln fought the Civil War to retain the integrity of the Union.
