Candidate Profile: Ryan Kilburg

Kilburg headshot #1Ryan Kilburg, of Zwingle, is seeking his first term in the Iowa House.  He is running to represent House District 57 which includes most of Dubuque County.

Ryan was raised in Bellevue and graduated from Bellevue High School.  After high school he attended the American Institute of Business and received a diploma in Computer Science.

Ryan worked for All American Homes and Wausau Homes, helping small business owners build residential homes and commercial buildings before he became a small business owner himself.  After seven years running his own company, he went to work for IBM and is currently a Service Availability Manager.  He and his wife, Rachael, also custom raise dairy calves on their 10 acre farm with their 10 year-old twins, Ryan II and Rebecca.

Candidate Profile: Darrel Branhagen

Branhagen headshotDarrel Branhagen, of Decorah, is seeking his first term in the Iowa House.  He is running to represent House District 55 which includes parts of Clayton, Fayette, and Winneshiek Counties.

Darrel grew up in Decorah where he graduated from Decorah High School, and then earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Wisconsin.  He also earned his law degree from Drake University in Des Moines.

After graduation, Darrel joined the Army and served in Panama, Bosnia, and Afghanistan.  In Afghanistan, he was Chief Coalition Military Advisor to the Afghanistan government.  He was awarded the Bronze Star and Combat Badge.  He served in the Army for 30 years, retiring as a Colonel.

Candidate Profile: Zach Nunn

Nunn headshot #2Zach Nunn, of Bondurant, is seeking his first term in the Iowa House.  He is running for House District 30 which includes Altoona and Bondurant.

A sixth-generation Iowan and Altoona native, Zach grew up the son of a public school teacher and a nurse.  He learned early the value of a hard work from his grandfather, a livestock farmer and head of the family’s 100+ year old Iowa farm.

Together, Zach and his wife Kelly, also an Altoona native, own and operate a small business.  They love raising their kids:  Addi (6) and Canon (4).

Candidate Profile: Ronda Bern

FavoriteRonda Bern, of Urbandale, is seeking her first term in the Iowa House.  She is running for House District 40 which includes parts of Urbandale in Polk County.

Ronda was born and raised in Spencer where she attended Catholic grade school and graduated from Spencer High School. She earned a Bachelors Degree in Political Science from Iowa State University. Ronda has been married to her high school sweetheart, Randy, for 24 years and they have two sons, Tucker and Blake.

As a homemaker and small business owner, Ronda knows what it is like to be dedicated to a family while staying active in the community and school and balancing the demands of business ownership. She and her husband own Vannguard Utility Partners, a multi-state underground locating business and provide jobs to around 200 people.

Candidate Profile: James Butler

©mrogalla photographyJames Butler, of St. Charles, is seeking his first term in the Iowa House.  He is running for House District 26 which includes portions of Warren County.

James was born in Des Moines, and growing up he was taught the value of a dollar and a hard day’s labor.  After graduating from Roosevelt High School, James earned his Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Des Moines Area Community College.  He was hired as a Des Moines Police Cadet in 1988 and a Police Officer in 1990.  During that time he also earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Management from Simpson College.  He also holds to Master of Arts Degrees:  One in Public Administration from Drake University, and one in Criminal Justice from Simpson College.

Candidate Profile: Patrick Payton

Payton headshotPatrick Payton, of Newton, is seeking his first term in the Iowa House.  He is running for House District 29 which includes portions of Jasper County.

Patrick grew up in a working-class family on the east side of Des Moines.  He worked his way through school and graduated from Drake University, becoming a teacher.  Eventually, he decided to practice law and graduated from Drake Law School.  After graduation, he set up his law practice in Des Moines.  Patrick has also earned a Ph.D. in Education from Iowa State University and has taught at several universities.

Patrick has live in Newton with his wife, Della, for over 20 years and has served 20 years on the Board of Directors for the bipartisan Governor’s Safety Conference.  He now wants to take his experiences and serve his community in the Iowa House.

Candidate Profile: Steven Holt

Holt headshotSteve Holt, of Denison, is seeking his first term in the Iowa House.  He is running for House District 18 which includes Crawford and Shelby Counties and eastern Harrison County.

Steve served our country for 20 years in the U.S. Marine Corps, completing numerous deployments overseas, and receiving countless decorations.  After his military service he entered law enforcement and worked as a Deputy Sheriff and Police Chief.  In 2002 he and his wife, Crystal, started their own small business, Movie Magic USA, a DVD internet store.  Last year they opened another small business, Summer Magic Tropical Snow in Denison.

In service to the community, Steve and Crystal created and sponsored the Denison High School Superior Academic Awards which recognizes academic performance.  They are also heavily involved with swim team programs.  Steve serves as a Board Member with the Music Booster as well.

Crystal is a public school teacher at the high school and community.  Together the couple have five children and attend Grace Evangelical Free Church in Denison.

Candidate Profile: John Blue

Blue headshotJohn Blue, of Council Bluffs, is seeking his first term in the Iowa House.  He is running in House District 15 which includes northwest Council Bluffs and Carter Lake.

John is the co-owner of Council Bluffs-based Blue J’s Lawn and Landscaping Co.  He started his small business in 2005, while earning his Associate’s Degree in applied science from Iowa Western Community College.  Since then, he has created four new jobs and plans to expand further down the road.

John and his wife, Jean, live near N 34th Street and Avenue C, just two blocks from where he grew up.  They have eight children and 20 grandchildren.

Candidate Profile: Mike Sexton

M SextonMike Sexton is seeking his first term in the Iowa House.  Mike is running in House District 10 which includes Calhoun, Humboldt, and Pocahontas Counties, and portions of Webster County.

Mike grew up in Rockwell City on the family farm and graduated from Rockwell City High School.  He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Ag Business from Iowa Lakes Community College.  Mike and his wife, Becky, started two small businesses that they currently manage.  Twin Lake Environmental Services is a consulting firm with a goal of keeping family farmers on their land.  Real Time Ag is a software company specializing in keeping producers current with regulatory reporting.

Mike was first elected to the Iowa Senate in 1998.  He chose not to seek reelection in 2002 so he could spend more time with his children while they were still at home.

Mike serves as President on the Rockwell City Lytton School Board.  He and his wife have five children and attend Rockwell City Presbyterian Church.

Candidate Profile: Brian Best

BestBrian Best, of Glidden, is seeking his first term in the Iowa House.  He is running for House District 12 which includes Audubon and Carroll Counties and eastern Crawford County.

Brian was born and raised on a farm south of Glidden.  He graduated from Glidden-Ralston High School and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science from the University of Northern Iowa.  He earned a degree as a Certified Respiratory Therapist in 1991 and is licensed as a Respiratory Care Practitioner by the State of Iowa.  Brian has worked in the medical field since 1984.

Brian and his wife, Sharon, started a family-owned business, Bestmed Respiratory in 2001 and in 2005, they opened Western Iowa Sleep (a sleep testing facility).  Both facilities are located in Carroll.  Bestmed specializes in equipment for seniors and patients who wish to remain living in their homes.  They began their businesses with one full-time employee, and now employ five people.

Brian is currently serving on the Planning and Zoning Board.  He and his wife have four children; Haley of Iowa City, Chelsey of Davenport, Amy of Waukee, and Lori who lives in Carroll.
