Iowa DOT OKs $2.6 Billion, Five-Year Highway Construction Plan

Des Moines Regsiter– The Iowa Transportation Commission today approved a $2.6 billion program for repairing and upgrading the state’s highway system over the next five years.

The commission, which serves as the policy-making arm of the Iowa Department of Transportation, established the plan for the budget years from 2013 through 2017. Officials said their main objective is to modernize the state’s primary highway system.

The plan includes urban reconstruction projects on interstate highways in Sioux City, Council Bluffs and the Quad Cities, plus construction work on dozens of other highways statewide.

Transportation Commission Grants Nearly $1 Million to Local Projects

Last week the Iowa Transportation Commission passed two Revitalize Iowa’s Sound Economy (RISE) Local Development grant application—one submitted by the city of Stuart and one by the city of Le Mars.

For Stuart, up to $303,750 will be available for construction of about 1,100 feet of South Seventh Street, 500 feet of Southwest Eighth Street, and intersection improvements on South Gaines Street and South Division Street (located on the southwest side of town.) The project is slated to be complete by November and is needed to access 68 acres for industrial purposes.
