Purple Heart Day Signed Into Law

On Wednesday, April 13, Rep. Dwayne Alons attended the bill signing for the bill designating August 7 as Iowa’s Purple Heart Day. HF 474 will be a day for Iowans to recognize all veterans who have been killed or wounded in hostile actions and have received a Purple Heart Medal for their sacrifice during military service to the United States of America. The bill was the original idea of a constituent of Rep. Chris Hagenow (R-Polk). HF 474 was assigned to Rep. Dwayne Alons, member of the Veterans Affairs Committee, as sub-committee chair and floor manager.

“I am pleased and honored to be a part of this long overdue recognition that our soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines deserve. Even though the day will not be an official holiday, it will be a great opportunity for veteran service organizations to keep the public aware of the high price of freedom that we all enjoy,” said Alons. Veterans History Project

Our nation’s history is dotted with wars that have shaped our country through different eras. Stories from those who served in those wars help keep our history alive and teach the next generation what freedom and sacrifice for one’s country really means. Unfortunately many of those stories go untold and are lost. The AIB College of Business hopes to help change that.

This upcoming Veterans Day, November 11, AIB is partnering with the Iowa and National Court Reporters Associations, the National Court Reporters Foundation, and the Library of Congress to host the 2nd annual Veterans History Project. The goal of the project is to collect and archive the personal recollections of U.S. wartime veterans so that their stories can be told to future generations. Veterans have given the ultimate sacrifice with their service and dedication to our country, and this is just one way to give back.
