(DES MOINES) – Today Rep. Lee Hein (R-Monticello) was chosen to serve as the Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee.  Hein will replace Rep. Pat Grassley (R-New Hartford) who was recently selected as Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee.

“It is an honor to be chosen by Speaker-elect Upmeyer as the new Chairman of the Agriculture Committee,” said Rep. Hein.  “Agriculture is the center of Iowa’s economy and the heart of our communities.  As a lifelong farmer, I am looking forward to working with fellow agricultural leaders to find solutions for our state’s primary industry.  I have been involved with farming and agriculture for my entire life, so I am excited to have the opportunity to lead this important committee.”

“As a farmer himself, Rep. Hein knows firsthand the challenges facing Iowa’s farmers and rural communities.  He is a proven leader who is always working to find positive solutions and move our state forward,” said Speaker-Select Linda Upmeyer (R-Clear Lake).

Rep. Hein most recently served as an Assistant Leader since 2014 and also served as the Chairman of the House Environmental Protection Committee from 2013-2015.  He has been a member of the Agriculture Committee every year since being elected, serving as the committee’s Vice Chairman from 2011-2013.

Hein, a family farmer, was first elected to the Iowa House in 2010.  He lives in rural Monticello on his family’s farm with his wife Jacky.  He and Jacky have two adult children.

Rep. Hein’s appointment as Agriculture Chair creates an opening for a new Assistant Leader, which a replacement will be chosen at a later date.
