House Republicans Roll Out 2009 Agenda
Today House Republicans rolled out their plans for the 2009 legislative session. The plan provides accountability and financial security for families, businesses, and taxpayers in Iowa.
The House Republican plan includes the following:
- Security for families: Protect Iowans identity from theft, keep our schools in the hands of locally elected officials, and raise education standards,.
- Security for taxpayers: Ban pork barrel spending, freeze property taxes, and rein in runaway government spending.
- Security for businesses: Strengthen Iowa’s Right to Work law, repeal the tax increase on small businesses, focus on creation of jobs built around renewable energy.
“Two years ago Iowans gave Democrats the keys to the car and said be careful, behave yourselves and most importantly, don’t wreck the car,” said House Republican Leader Christopher Rants. “While Iowans were busy working, raising their kids and being involved in their communities, Democrats raised their taxes, increased government spending and attacked our right to work. Democrats wrecked the car.”
Instead of empty promises, Republicans are detailing exactly what they’ll do in the first month on the job.

Republicans will accomplish the following during the first month of the 2009 session.
- Strengthen Iowa’s Right to Work law. This law protects all non-union workers from being forced to pay union dues. States with Right to Work laws create more jobs and have higher incomes than states that don’t.
- Repeal the $50 Million Tax Increase on Small Businesses. House Democrats passed a painful tax increase on Iowa’s small businesses last session and Republicans will immediately repeal the increase.
- Freeze Property Taxes. Republicans will freeze property tax increases for Iowans so they can catch their breath from the floods and other natural disasters.
- Ban Pork Barrel Spending. Republicans will ban any future pork barrel projects like decorative flower pots, and cancel pork such as a new recreation center in Des Moines that Democrats approved.
