Iowa has transformed its agricultural economy over the past 50 years to a diversified one that covers a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, food processing, financial services and biotechnology. Des Moines is a major financial services hub, with big employers like Principal Financial and Wells Fargo. At 4.8%, Iowa’s recent unemployment rate is a reminder that the state fared better than most during the recession.
The study looks at six important factors for businesses: costs, labor supply, regulatory environment, current economic climate, growth prospects and quality of life.
Additionally, 11 of the top 15 states are run by Republican governors.
