David Tjepkes was first elected in 2002. David was born on April 22, 1944, in Sibley. His father, Luke, and mother, Lydia, were farmers.

He grew up in northwest Iowa in Lyon county and graduated from high school in George, Iowa, in 1962. Upon graduation from high school, David attended the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in Johnston and graduated in 1966. He went on to serve his community as an Iowa State Trooper, but has since retired.

In September of 1963, David married his wife, Judi, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Together they have three grown boys: Steven, Brett, and Michael. They are also blessed with four grandchildren.

David and Judi attend Gowrie United Methodist Church, where David is an active member. He holds a position on the building committee and serves as an usher and a worship leader. He was also the church finance chair and treasurer.

He is a member of the Gowrie Historical Society, the Webster County Historical Society, Rose Lodge #506 and the Gowrie Economic Development Committee. David also serves his community by delivering congregate meals to shut-ins

David was previously the mayor of the city of Gowrie.
