Kim was born in Nebraska and raised in Iowa. She received a BA in political science and earned a law degree from the University of Iowa. She is a retired attorney and now a private home educator.

Kim is married to her husband Bryan. They have two daughters, Morgan and Monica. The family lives on an acreage in the Southeast Polk area called Four Mile Township.
