Home of Field of Dreams
Located just outside of Dyersville, “The Field of Dreams” offers you the opportunity to wander through the same cornfields from where Shoeless Joe Jackson emerged in the movie of the same name. Come swing a bat, pitch some fastballs or simply take in the beautiful scenery when you visit and understand why the phrase, “Is this Heaven? No, it’s Iowa,” is more true today than ever. Xavier Basilica in Dyersville
Located in Dyersville, Xavier Basilica is filled with historic treasurers around each corner. This architectural gem is one of only 33 basilicas in the United States, and its twin spires pierce more than 200 ft. into the sky. The structure was completed in 1889. Please visit Xavier Basilica’s official website by going here: http://www.xavierbasilica.com/.
Delaware County Historical Museum
This museum sits on the site of the former Lenox College in Hopkinton. It offers a rare glimpse into Iowa’s role in the Civil War. The museum offers displays and insight on not only Civil War history, but natural history and the area’s agricultural roots as well. Come see what this great museum has to offer! Bay Church Cemetary Memorial in Delhi
“This 8 foot marble shaft is located in a country cemetery back of Bay Church. The monument was dedicated in August of 1865 in memory of the 14 young men from the area that gave their lives. There are inscriptions on the four sides with the names of the 14 soldiers. An annual Decoration Day service is conducted which closely follows the first service which occurred on May 30, 1866. The cemetery is located a distance in back of the historic Bay Church which was erected in 1873 and restored in 1996. Thank you to SUVCW member James Johnston for providing information about this historic monument and the Decoration Day ceremony. Go past the Delhi town cemetery on 230th Avenue over 2 miles – then turn right on 275th Street 1.8 miles to Bay Church.” (Information and photo from Iowa Civil War Monuments, located by going here: http://www.iowacivilwarmonuments.com/cgi-bin/gaarddetails.pl?1212022857)
