Positive and Ongoing

As this week comes to a close, we still find ourselves without adjournment for the year. That being said, negotiations are positive and ongoing here in Des Moines.

The major holdup to adjournment simply boils down to the fact that Democrats want to spend more money. House Republicans continue to stand firm that the overall size of the budget spends less than $6 billion. This remains several hundred million less than was spent in previous years with no transfer to the back of the property tax payer.

It also ensures we implement a budget that spends less than the state takes in. In fact, under our plan the overall budget spends just 97 percent of ongoing revenue. While Democrats want to spend more, we remain committed to funding Iowans’ priorities while reducing the size, scope and cost of government – a promise we made to Iowans last fall, and a promise we will keep.

There are still other measures that remain on the table for negotiations, including property tax relief. I am still hopeful something significant will be agreed upon this year. While discussions over property taxes continue to occur, rest assured that House Republicans will fight to make certain ALL property tax payers see relief.

This weekend I will once again be on Iowa Press on Iowa Public Television. You can tune in on Friday at 7:30pm or Sunday at 11:30am. It will also be posted online at http://www.iptv.org/iowapress/

As we continue to work through the process, please feel free to continue to share your thoughts with me. You can contact me at my office at (515) 281-3521 or by email at kraig.paulsen@legis.state.ia.us
