No Republican filed for the office this spring to appear on the June 5 primary ballot. But the Republican Party of Iowa announced on Friday that it would hold a special nominating convention on Aug. 1 to select a candidate.
Whoever wins faces a tough race: the 33rd District is home to House Democratic Leader Kevin McCarthy, and is generally seen as a safe seat for the incumbent.
The convention is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Aug. 1 at the Republican Party of Iowa Headquarters, 621 East 9th Street in Des Moines.
The delegates to the convention will be the 12 Polk County GOP Central Committee members who live in the district.
