Join Iowa’s veterans on their special day, Veterans Day at the Iowa State Fair, on Monday, August 17th. There will be a number of special events marking the day, including a parade, band performances, and various informational booths and displays.
Those who are at the Fair early can start the day off with “You Made a Difference: A Salute to America’s Veterans,” presented by Mike and Nancy Baethke of Indianola. The salute starts at 9 am and is located in the Farm Bureau Pioneer Hall.
Most attractions for the day will be located at the Grand Concourse of the Fair where the Veterans Day Parade will begin at 10 am. Also housed at the Grand Concourse are the Department of Veterans Affairs Welcome Home booth, the U.S. Submarine Veterans Incorporated booth and the National Veteran’s Golden Age Games Display. All of those displays and booths, as well as those by other service organizations and entities, will be there to answer questions and to provide information all day.
Later in the day, Fair-goers can enjoy music performed by military bands.
Later in the day, Fair-goers can enjoy music performed by military bands. The 34th Army Band of Des Moines will be performing at the Susan Knapp Amphitheater at 12:30 pm. After that, the Iowa Military Veteran’s Band of Des Moines will also be performing in the Susan Knapp Amphitheater at 3 pm.
Regular gate admission is $10 for adults, $4 for children ages 6-11, and free for children 5 and under. Also, half-price admission ($5 adults and $2 children) will be offered on Veterans’ Day from 5 pm to 10 pm.
